The Royal Textile Academy organized a Fashion Show on May 15, 2012 at the Youth Development Hall in Thimphu. Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The show was attended by members of the Royal Family, cabinet ministers and senior government officials, members of the international organizations in Bhutan, friends of the Royal Textile Academy and the Textile Museum and other invitees.

The Fashion Show was organized to showcase the pieces from the National Design Competition organized by the Textile Museum as well as to provide a platform for local designers to showcase their latent talents. The Executive Director Mrs. Rinzin O. Dorji in her welcome address mentioned that The Fashion Show was one of the efforts on the part of the RTA in collaboration with the Textile Museum, to preserve, promote as well as recognize weavers and the weaving art. “The pieces showcased this evening are from the National Design Competition 2012. This Competition is an annual event organized by the Textile Museum to encourage weavers to design quality weaves which not only espouse traditional patterns and designs but also encourages them to experiment and create innovative modern designs. We had over a hundred entries to the competition this year including ghos, kiras and embroidery works sent in from all over the country.  The models will display 28 of these pieces. The quality of the weaves, color combinations and design this year are excellent.   It was not an easy task for our panel of judges to select the best”, she said.

Prizes for the winning entries in the National Design Competition 2012 was awarded by Her Majesty.

The show was directed and choreographed by Kelly Dorji from Tertoen Woezer Associates.
