The Royal Textile Academy (RTA) will host the World Premiere performance of a new original production of GF Handel’s opera “Acis and Galatea,” next Saturday.

A press release from the (RTA) says the opera is based on an ancient myth that celebrates the triumph of compassion and goodness over anger, greed and ignorance.

The program will involve singers, musicians, dancers, costume designers, and other artists from Bhutan and abroad.

The participating artists from abroad began arriving in Bhutan from September 24 for the final rehearsal together with their Bhutanese counterparts.

The rehearsals take place daily in the Royal Textile Academy’s courtyard and are free and open to public.

The participating institutions and organisations in Bhutan include the Department of Culture, Ministry of Home and Culture Affairs, The Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) and the Royal Textile Academy (RTA).

The Project is sponsored by the University of Texas at El Paso (USA) in celebration of nearly 100 years of respect, admiration and friendship with the people and culture of Bhutan, with additional assistance provided from the Smithsonian Institution (Center of Folk life and Cultural Heritage) and other generous supporters from Australia, Italy and Netherlands.
