Galatea

Live Opera of Handel’s ‘Acis & Galatea’ story held in Bhutan on the 12th of Oct. 2013 at the Royal Textile Academy premises is the result of many years of cross cultural collaboration between The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Royal Government of Bhutan that all began in 2004. It was Mr. Aaron Carpene (Project leader/ Musical Director) who came forward with the idea of staging an operatic project in Bhutan along with Mr. Preston Scott (Bhutan Liaison).

Handel’s ‘Acis & Galatea’ was chosen because of its universal theme of eternal love. Joined by the Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) the classical western musical play was re-directed by Stefano Vizioli to incorporate elements of traditional Bhutanese expressions, dance and music. This musical integration between the two cultures presented against the backdrop of Bhutan’s scenic landscape made the story an enriching and unforgettable experience. Her Majesty The Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck graced the show as the honourable Chief Guest.
